在竞争激烈的政治选举中，撰稿人的地位显得尤为重要，凯文（迈克尔·基顿 Michael Keaton 饰）和茱莉亚（吉娜·戴维斯 Geena Davis 饰）正是其中的一员。看似风光的职业，背后却是巨大的压力和无情的斗争，一次偶然中，身心俱疲的凯文和茱莉亚相遇了，同病相怜的两人瞬间擦出了激情的火花。 不幸的是，由于工作上无法调解的冲突，凯文和茱莉亚的恋情以破灭告终，心绪郁结的两人不惜相互伤害，茱莉亚更是一时冲动回到了未婚夫鲍勃（克里斯托弗·里夫 Christopher Reeve 饰）的身边。茱莉亚无意中掉落的工作笔记帮助凯文在工作上获得了成功，但很快，凯文便得知茱莉亚因此即将遭到被辞退的厄运，于心不忍的凯文出手相助，也因和茱莉亚重修旧好。
